Why do we pray?(1)
We pray because of afflictions! God Himself has prescribed that if we notice that we are afflicted, the logical thing to do is to pray. (James 5:13)´´Is any
among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let
him sing psalms´´.To remind God his promises so as to spur him to action; reason with God. God has told us that we
should always remind him of his promises towards us. He said he places high value on his words, even above his name!(Psalm 138:2)´´ will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name´´. To dispel accusations by the accuser of the brethren (the devil),to win a case in God´s court of law and so on and so forth. (Isaiah 43:26)´´Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified´´. God has a high stake in our guiltlessness so he desires that we come to his court of law from-time-to-time in order for us to be justified and pronounced NOT guilty and acquited. Joshua,in the bible,is a very good example of a person whose life the devil was bent on ruffling until God intervened and rebuked Satan;(Zechariah 3:2)´´And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?´´. God was able to do this because Joshua´s ways pleased him! To better analyse the symbolism of prayer, let us see it this way; God has a constitution, which is the holy bible, with which he governs his territory. He has handed us the constitution that we may master the codes of conduct in his kingdom. He discovered that after ages of Man´s study of his words,we could still not be righteous on our own so he bought up our sins with the blood of Jesus. Our offence before the court of this land(of God) is no more how unholy we are; it is how much we have refused to claim the purchase made by the blood of Jesus which is supposed to make us righteous!
So we go to his court and tell him that even though we have been sinners,we have utilised the essence of the blood of Jesus. We quote the scripture in order for us to be justified before him. (Proverbs 18:10)´´The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe´´. (Isaiah 59:19)´´..When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him´´. To read Why do we pray?(2),click here
